The diet stereotype says that if you want to shed pounds, you must eat less and work out more. While there is some truth to this, avoid taking it too far after having a baby. Your body is recovering from an intense, difficult experience. If you drop weight too quickly, that can be harmful to your health. You need calories and nutrients to keep up with your new motherly duties as well as any previous responsibilities at home.

Make sure you do not cut out important foods that your body needs right now, such as dairy products. Diary offers a new mother a great source of calcium. Without it, you put yourself at a higher risk for developing osteoporosis, a bone-related condition that plagues many women. Anxious as you might be to drop pounds, make sure you give yourself at least seven months to fully recover from the birthing process.

The New Mom Workout

Weight loss after pregnancy will include exercise, just like any other weight loss plan. However, make sure you are doing the right type of workout at the right time. The most problematic area for most women after having a child is the stomach region. You may notice stretching and bulges here that you want to get rid of.  Eventually, you will want to include exercises that target the stomach, however make sure at least a few months have passed since giving birth.  If you exercise this area too soon, you could risk making the problem even worse by shifting muscles forward.

Your body has just gone through an enormous change and a nine month long process. Even if you were very active prior to getting pregnant, do not expect to return to that lifestyle right away. Instead, start slow and take small steps. Weight loss after pregnancy will happen, but you must allow time to build yourself back up.
