A High Fiber Diet: The Diet for Life

Desperation is indirectly the reason behind the success of the weight loss industry. People become so desperate to lose weight that they are willing to compromise their health. Most weight loss supplements promise easy and rapid weight loss and many are understandably attracted. The truth of the matter is, in the same way that it takes time for excess fat to accumulate, it likewise requires some time to get rid of all of it. Weight loss products do yield results that show on the weighing scale but what many are not aware of is the fact that the weight that has been shed off is usually just water weight and not fat weight. Moreover, the weight that can be lost can just as quickly be regained.
Many health and nutrition experts consider the high-fiber diet to be the best general diet around. It is easy to see why. Fiber does many beneficial things to the body. It is low in calories but very filling thus making it a natural appetite suppressant. It aids in the maintenance of normal blood sugar levels one effect of which is the elimination of cravings for sugary treats. As it passes through the digestive tract, fiber absorbs fats and cholesterol and sweeps clean the intestinal and colon walls of waste matter and toxin build-up thereby cleansing and detoxifying the system.
A sudden switch to a diet rich in high-fiber foods can sometimes cause bloat and gas. In order to avoid this, fibrous foods should be gradually introduced into one’s diet. Making a drastic and complete change will shock the system and result in digestive trouble. However, there are also other factors that cause bloating and gas which need to be considered such as eating poor food combinations, consuming too much processed foods and eating too rapidly.
High-fiber foods include fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, whole grains, and bran. These foods are not only high in nutrients but they also leave dieters satisfied for a long period of time thereby eliminating the desire to eat unnecessarily.
Weight loss is just one of the benefits of a high-fiber diet making it far superior to other well-known diets. The latter are typically lacking in nutrients and often focus on only one type of food. Such diets border on starvation which is why they are not meant to be followed on a long term basis. A high-fiber diet, on the other hand, promotes overall health and wellness and is meant to be a permanent part of one’s healthy lifestyle.
