How to De-calorize Fast Food Meals

    By LiteGirl | March 10, 2010

Fast food is such a big part of our culture that it is just impossible to live without it. Because of the fast-paced lifestyle of modern America, a large portion of our diet is made up of fast food meals and processed foods. This means that we ingest many unhealthy substances into our bodies such as preservatives, monosodium glutamate or MSG, trans fat, and sugar on a regular basis. Not to mention a large amount of excess calories.

People who want to eat healthy are caught in a dilemma. A lot of them move in an environment where the food choices are limited to meals offered by fast food chains. One way of adapting to this situation and still eat healthy is to select meals carefully despite the limited choices.

A men’s health magazine editor was, at one point, caught in the same dilemma described above. By making the appropriate food choices whenever he ate out, he was able to solve the problem.

According to the same editor, one need not give up his or her favorite food if it happens to be one that is typically loaded with calories. He suggests that finding an appropriate alternative can make a difference in terms of caloric content. For instance, a burrito from Taco Bell is a better choice than the hundred calorie version offered by Chipotle.

Below are other similar tips to help you have leaner, healthier meals when eating out:

Make it simple – An order of sandwich sans the extras such as cheese and additional patties spares you of at least 6 grams of fat. A normal serving size of taco salad has less calories and fats. Also, instead of cheese and sauces, have chunky salsa instead.

Pick the right pizza – If you want pizza for lunch, go for the thin crust version. This will save you a minimum of 100 calories. To further cut down its caloric content, choose one with limited toppings.

So long to foot-long – Rather than ordering a foot-long sandwich, get a shorter one but double the meat. That way you not only lessen your caloric intake, but you also get to save some money.

Flee from fries – Choose salad over fries. An order of green salad contains significantly less calories than a small serving of fries.

If you follow the above tips, you can enter a fast food restaurant and not be a victim of caloric overload. Now you can enjoy your fast food meal and not feel any guilt.
